ST. ANN’S — Participating in the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program may open up a whole new appreciation of the great outdoors.

Three days of workshops at the Nova Scotia Gaelic College of Arts and Crafts in St. Ann’s, Feb. 8-10, will introduce women to cross-country skiing, winter camping, ice fishing, winter tracking and survival, to name a few.

“The college is an ideal location for this type of outdoor adventure program. It’s close to excellent fishing areas, there is plenty of opportunity to observe wildlife and travel the trails for hiking and cross-country skiing,” said Gaelic college staff member Peggy MacAskill.”

“The workshops are ideal for women who have never experienced the outdoors. Also for those who have some experience, but want to become more skilled and confident about taking advantage of our winter outdoor environment.”

She added the BOW program is also ideal for those who do participate in outdoor activities but want to gain additional experience or better understand nature.

Originally started in the United States in 1991, Nova Scotia began offering the program to women about 10 years ago. It was started in response to the recognition that barriers exist which discourage women from participating in some outdoor activities.

Women of all ages and walks of life attend the fall and winter workshops, which are held across the province. Many are going through various life changes and welcome the opportunity to develop friendships and spend time with other women.

Program partners are the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Cross Country Ski Nova Scotia, Department of Natural Resources, and Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
